Magical medical turmeric

turmeric-powder-desibantu

Look at the variety of protection that India’s traditional turmeric provides. It includes not only safety from heart failure but also cancer and gall stone prevention, besides reduction in cholesterol, and increasing the formation of scars to heal wounds.

The Journal of Clinical Investigation has published studies from the Cardiology Division of the University of Toronto, Canada, that show that when an ingredient in the curry spice turmeric, curcumin, is given orally to various mouse models suffering from hypertrophy (an enlargement of the heart), it is possible to prevent as well as reverse hypertrophy, stop failure of the heart, restore its functioning and reduce the formation of scars.

Turmeric has wonderful anti ageing, antibiotic and antiseptic properties. As a beauty product, it is often used in skin creams also.

During the research, rats were given curcumin and were then either operated upon or given drugs that would endanger them with heart failure. Those animals which consumed curcumin had greater resistance to heart failure and inflammation when compared to those sets of rats which could not get to taste the curcumin.

Enlargement of the heart was also reversed with the treatment of curcumin because this short-circuited the process of enlargement of the heart process although how it happens is not perfectly clear.

Turmeric’s properties for healing have been well-known for centuries. Traditional Indian medicine has used this herb to reduce the formation of scar. If someone suffers a bruise or cut at home, for instance, people reach for turmeric powder at once since it is known to help to heal so that there is no scar.

The bride’s family brings turmeric, betel leaves, nuts and clothes and garlands the groom even as sugar candy is distributed to all present.

In recent times, science has put the spotlight on curcumin, while carrying out research on turmeric’s potential advantage in reducing the levels of cholesterol and improving cardiovascular health besides fighting cancer.

The dosage of turmeric is recommended to be 300 mg to be taken with meals thrice a day. It is useful when acting as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-rheumatic medication. This is in addition to lowering cholesterol, fighting cancer and preventing gall stones. Turmeric is also helpful in such diseases as dyspepsia, dysmenorrhoea, peptic ulcer disease, muscle soreness, HIV, scabies and uveitis.

Moreover, curcuminoids act as free radical scavengers besides also inhibiting leukotrienes and synthesis of prostaglandins. It has been claimed that the anti-inflammatory activity is comparable to such NSAIDs as indomethacin.

In addition to lowering blood lipid peroxides, curcuminoids decrease the total cholesterol and LDL (or bad) cholesterol, while increasing HDL (or good) cholesterol. Another claim is that turmeric has also inhibited platelet aggregation.

This is just a glimpse of the benefits abounding in this rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, turmeric.Turmeric has wonderful anti ageing, antibiotic and antiseptic properties. As a beauty product, it is often used in skin creams also.

Drink More water – For 6 Reasons

Drink more water

Drink more Water

An adequate amount of water daily is important for overall good health .As you already know, water is the ultimate life-giver all over the globe. For people, it offers a multitude of benefits, including healing. So you need to drink glasses and glasses of it for the following six reasons:

Bolster your digestive system

Clean your system of digestion up in the most natural way. Gulping water is to your innards what splashing your face with the same liquid is. The equivalent to the glow your face feels is what your insides feel when they are flushed with fresh water. Nor do you need to read up on this in medical diet literature, consult a doctor or spend money on medicine.

De-crease your face’s creasing lines

Far better than all those anti-ageing creams on the market that you put on your face is plain water. It naturally moisturises skin, improves skin elasticity and replenishes the tissues of the skin. Water is just the thing for making your skin look more youthful.

Reduce the “spare tires” at your waist

Water is to your metabolism what oil is to an efficiently-running machine. And, just like the machine when oil runs out, your metabolism slows down when there isn’t enough inflow of water. As a result, fats get processed more slowly. So drink eight to 10 glasses of water and reduce the unwanted bulges on your body.

Get that ache out of your head

If you suffer from headaches, especially chronic ones, for a long time, don’t bother going out to a chemist’s and spending money buying some analgesic pills. First think of drinking some glasses of water. Chances are you will be relieved because it has been found that 90 per cent of all headaches are most likely caused by dehydration of the body.

Improve your mood

When you’re feeling low and want to raise your mood, simply drink water. It’s the most natural cure in more ways than one. Besides helping to relieve headaches and decrease backaches, it rejuvenates your body and refreshes it because many of these bodily afflictions are merely because of dehydration. And drinking water takes care of that problem.

Asthmatics breathe easier with water
If there is a shortage of water vapor in the lungs, the airways get constricted. This develops mucus in the lungs, leading to attacks of asthma. Medical specialists recommend that people suffering from asthma should drink at least 10 glasses of water with a pinch of salt a day. Another form of treatment is taking an inhalation of steam from a bowl.

Beating diabetes in 10 ways

1. Burn off calories more than you eat or drink – To consume less calories than you use is very healthy. Always opt for foods which have low calories while increasing your physical activity – like walking more, climbing stairs and consciously trying to stay active.

2. Be aware of your waist measurements – A slim waist is a sign of better health – not just an attractive figure. According to experts, men should keep their waist measurement below 90 cm (35.5 inches) and women less than 80 cm (31.5 inches).

3. Eat more frequent but smaller meals – For instance, instead of eating three solid meals a day, it would be healthier to change to a divide and eat policy. Instead of taking four chappaties, for example, you can have two at one time and two after a couple of hours or so. And, regardless of anything, always have breakfast.

4. Add vegetables and fruits to your diet – Consciously try to consume plenty of fruits (not juices which are not as nourishing) and vegetables – more so, green leafy vegetables. They will immensely benefit your overall health, sense of well-being and appearance.

5. The gain with whole grains – When you eat wheat, oats and brown rice you will have a more healthy diet than any kind of refined foods. You will keep diabetes at bay when you make these a part of your diet.

6. There’s nothing to beat exercise – The power of regular exercise as a safeguard against diabetes is far greater than that of any medicine created. Through at least 30 minutes of regular exercise a day, you can prevent diabetes, heart disease and various other illnesses. Exercise not only keeps you healthy, it improves your looks and makes life far more enjoyable.

7. De-stress – Stress and diabetes have a strong correlation according to experts. There is much that you can do to avoid and reduce stress in your life. You can meditate, practise yoga, do aerobics – the list goes on.

8. Stop smoking – The American Journal of Epidemiology published a study according to which a person smoking between 16 and 25 cigarettes a day was three times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than a non-smoker.

9. Take less salt – Diabetes and hypertension are very closely connected. It has been found that there are twice as many diabetic people suffering from hypertension than non-diabetics. Thus, if you have any elements of risk of diabetes or hypertension, reduce your salt intake.

10. Regularly check the levels of your cholesterol and blood sugar – If you have a family history of diabetes, along with any one of the risk factors mentioned above, ensure that you regularly check on cholesterol and blood sugar.

How come “An Apple a Day keeps the Doctor Away”?

Apple

Apple

Amazing how this fruit works on health by strengthening the immune system, preventing cancerous growths and helping loss of weight. And all you need to do is munch one apple every day!

How do apples do it?
In 2008, a German cancer research centre published an important research report that showed how apples offer a significant health benefit. They compared a group of people who had less than one apple a day with one that had one or more apples a day and found that the latter had a lower risk of a wide range of cancers – of the mouth, larynx, breast, intestinal, kidney and ovaries.

Fresh research at Cornell University was supported by the above, as these showed that the peel of the apple has strong anti-oxidant properties, which are a strong block against the influences of breast cancer cells. Researchers found that the concentration of cancerous cells reduced with the higher concentration of apples.

Cancerous growths are uncontrollable growths of cells independently spreading through the body. The growths are based on three principal levels. First are the mutations caused in cell DNA. Next is when the growth becomes malignant and accelerates. The last is when causes cancer cells to spread throughout the body.

Apples aren’t used only as anti-oxidants in cases of a cancerous growth. They also improve the immune system function, and this helps to clean out the growths at the early stages.

Besides boosting the immune system and fighting cancerous growths, apples also help control the cholesterol and sugars levels in the blood, prevent heart disease and improve mouth hygiene. They are one of the healthiest foods simply because they contain more than 80% water and a long line of essential vitamins.

The apple’s nutritional fibres
We can be rewarded with about 4.4 grams of nutritional fibres by simply eating one apple a day with its peel. That is one-fifth of the recommended amount of an entire day.

Nutritional fibres come from plants and play a crucial role in stimulating the digestive system and encouraging its function. Because they are not digested, they sate hunger longer. What’s important is the chewing – not in drinking apple juice, for instance.

How is this relevant to apples?
Apples are a major source of nutritional fibres, particularly pectin fibres. These are a group of complex carbohydrates that regulate our bowels, improve good cholesterol rates and provide powerful anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial support.

Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, have shown that consuming pectin instead of regular fibre empties the stomach in two hours instead of one – ensuring that we don’t feel hungry for a longer time.

All of which adds to our health and well-being.

AT 60+, CHECK OUT YOUR HEALTH

9

To keep senior citizens healthy, happy, and safe, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends some simple medical tests. These are as effective for the people of India and elsewhere. Thus, you can consider getting these done when you visit your regular doctor. Of course, your doctor may recommend additional tests based on your own health profile.

• Blood pressure

Millions of people have high blood pressure and don’t know it. If you are among them, get your blood pressure checked by your doctor at least once a year. This will benefit your heart, arteries, brain, eyes, and kidneys.

• Weight

When you gain weight, muscle is replaced by fat as you get older. That fat then goes to your waist. Also, before because your body’s metabolism is slowing down, you don’t burn calories as well as you once did. Get alerted by any weight-gain.

• Rectal exam

A rectal exam and a faecal occult blood test (FOBT) must be taken once a year. This will tell of any masses or subtle bleeding that cannot be seen with the naked eye. It may also give clues to treatable problems in your colon (think colon cancer) or prostate for men along with other medical tests your doctor may recommend.

• Other cancer screening tests

One of several tests to look for colon cancer is colonoscopy. It should be done every 10 years beginning at age 50. Talk to your doctor to see what’s best for you.

• For women, a breast exam and mammogram

Because breast cancer risk increases with age, it’s especially important for you to get that annual mammogram and doctor’s breast exam. Starting at 40 or 50 years old, a mammogram is recommended every one to two years. Talk to your doctor about when you should begin regular mammograms.

• For women, a pelvic exam and Pap smear

Many women over 60 need to get regular pelvic exams and Pap smears. That’s because cervical cancer or vaginal cancer can strike older women. And only the pelvic exam can detect a host of other conditions that may affect your health and quality of life (for instance, need to frequently urinate). In fact, Pap smears are recommended every three years. This can be omitted if a woman is older than 65 and has had three negative Pap smears in a row or has had a total hysterectomy.

• Sight

Such eye diseases as macular degeneration, cataract and glaucoma become common with age. So get your eyes checked every two years at least until age 60 and annually after that. Screening can preserve and maximize your vision.

Hearing
• Most of older people’s hearing problems are treatable. Therefore, a hearing test must be done at least once in three years.

• Bones
If you have osteoporosis and suffer a fracture – especially of the hip – you risk permanent disability or even death. So ask your doctor to for a bone density test especially if you are a woman aged over 65.

• Cholesterol

People suffer heart attacks and strokes if they have high cholesterol levels. However, through diet and medications, high cholesterol levels can be treated. Hence, regularly measuring your levels of total cholesterol – HDL “good” cholesterol and LDL “bad” cholesterol – is important. An ‘advanced lipid test’ gives even more information on cardiovascular risk.

• Vaccinations

A pneumococcal vaccine is essential for people over 65 to protect against pneumonia. Likewise, an annual flu shot is necessary for anyone older than 50, and a tetanus booster recommended every 10 years along with a one-time tetanus vaccination that also has pertussis vaccine (whooping cough) in it.

Yoga Asanas to Fight Diabetics

Cities all over the India are experiencing a rise in diabetes. While a diet that is free of sugar and starch is medically approved, you can obtain added benefit from yoga.

Regular practice of yoga not only helps to lose weight — the most effective recommendation for Type 2 diabetes control — but the pancreas can be stimulated by certain yogic asanas to produce sufficient insulin for controlling the level of sugar in the body.

Incorporating the following techniques into your daily exercise routine will help you to keep diabetes in check:

yoga_for_diabetics_kapalbha

Kapalbhati: This pranayama technique uses vigorous and powerful breathing exercises along with stomach movements to stimulate the pancreas.

Method: Sit cross-legged with a straight spine, your stomach pulled in and arms on your lap with thumbs and fingertips meeting – i.e. in the gyan position. Thus, your spine gets aligned with the back of your head. Next, relax your stomach muscles. Then expel the air from your lungs through your nose as forcefully as you comfortably can.

Your abdominal muscles will thus contract sharply and your abdomen drawn inwards towards your spine (just as when you suck in your stomach). Now inhale completely and passively without any additional effort. Make sure that all the breathing takes place through your nose. Immediately after inhaling passively, forcefully exhale again. Continue at a steady rhythm of 10 rounds of 20-25 repetitions each.

yoga_for_diabetics_vajrasan

Vajrasana: Stomach movement is promoted by this position which helps to stimulate the pancreas.

Method: With folded legs and clenched fists, sit in the namaz position. After putting your hands on your thighs, press them into your stomach and bend forward while exhaling. Next, draw your body back into the upright position and inhale. Remain in each position for at least two minutes. If you are a beginner, repeat this routine 10-15 times.

yoga_for_diabetics_sarvanga
Sarvangasana: Breaking down the sugar in your blood through calorie-burning exercise is very important. So experts suggest that, instead of just taking a walk every morning, alternate it with other calorie-burning yogasanas like sarvangasana.

Method: Lie flat on your back. Slowly raise your legs while inhaling deeply. Lift your hips and legs straight till your toes point to the ceiling. While breathing slowly and deeply through your abdomen hold the pose as long as you are comfortable. Next, bend your knees and place your palms on the floor to come out of the posture.

Slowly curve your spine and gradually unfold your body like when a carpet unrolls. After your entire back touches the floor, straighten your knees, take a deep breath and, while breathing out slowly, lower your legs to the ground. Continue at a steady rhythm of 10 rounds.
